You must at all times make it a point to keep your hands clean prior to touching your belly button piercing. You need to do this to ensure that your hands are not the source of contamination for the area that has been pierced. The use of sterile cotton, cotton gauze or other disinfected material should be used for cleaning from the second night onwards.

Healing of navel piercing can be made difficult by irritation and wounds caused by clothing, particularly waistlines or tight clothing, or the location of the navel in relation to the curve of the waist.

Navel piercing may cause certain infections if not done with proper care and attention. The pierced site may sometimes discharge of off-white or white in color sticky discharge. This condition can be avoided by following the below mentioned a few aftercare tips.
  • Make sure that do not touch the pierced site till it heals completely and wash your hands with an antibiotic lotion before touching the piercing.
  • Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes, stockings, large belts and body suits as they may create friction in and around the area.
  • Make sure that you avoid sleeping on your stomach during the healing period.
  • Wear clean and fresh clothes in order to avoid infections.
  • Clean the pierced site with the help of an antibiotic soap regularly in order to remove the crust formed in the area.
  • Avoid the usage of peroxide and alcohol to clean the pierced site and make sure that you do not expose it to infectious agents.
  • Use saline solution at least twice in a day as this helps in speeding the healing process.
  • Avoid swimming and physical activities that may cause irritation to the pierced site.
